On August 13, the "Bilbao" ship under MSC Shipping Company successfully completed all repair and modification tasks at Xinhong Heavy Industry and entered the trial navigation phase.
The "Bilbao" ship is 334 meters long and 43 meters wide. It is the second container series desulfurization device modification project ship undertaken by Xinhong Heavy Industry for MSC Company. The main repair and modification works include: installation of a hybrid desulfurization device, bow modification, routine dry dock repair works, and installation of a ballast water system. The project involves a large and complex workload, with high technical requirements and significant construction difficulty. Referring to the successful modification experience of the first ship, the "Mediterranean Paris," the project team held a special seminar before the "Bilbao" entered the yard to analyze the bow modification plan and proposed key improvements different from the "Paris" ship: conducting actual ship measurements in advance, modifying during the prefabrication stage to ensure assembly accuracy; and suggesting to retain the pre-assembly scaffolding to address difficulties in using high-altitude vehicles, which could delay the construction schedule. This not only accelerated the construction progress but also saved on high-altitude vehicle maintenance costs.
To promote the safe and efficient completion of the project, the project team closely coordinated with various departments, developed a detailed construction plan, and optimized the construction process, ensuring that all production plans progressed in an orderly manner. Before the pre-assembly, the service workshop planned the scaffolding construction scheme with the workshop supervisor and construction team leader, allowing the scaffolding to move with the new sections. During assembly, personnel were arranged to be on standby at all times to adjust the scaffolding as needed, greatly accelerating the project progress.
On July 6, the bow modification project of the "Bilbao" was completed in just 4.5 days, finishing all external plate works and passing inspection 2.5 days ahead of the planned schedule, providing strong support for subsequent painting, electrical work, and debugging.


During the modification process of the fiberglass pipes, the engine room and the upper construction tower were worked on simultaneously, with multiple segments of piping pre-installed in advance, including grinding and bonding operations, significantly improving work efficiency. The desulfurization smoke pipe and auxiliary machine three-way smoke valve could not continue to be installed upwards from the chimney D due to limitations in on-site coordinates, which occupied crane time for a long duration, requiring constant adjustments to the on-site scaffolding. Therefore, the project team optimized the construction plan, conducted on-site assembly and layout, and reasonably coordinated crane usage time, completing the installation of the smoke pipes 2 days ahead of the original production schedule. Meanwhile, the main pipe group also strengthened safety production control to avoid cross-operation hazards, ensuring steady progress of all projects.
The completion of repairs on the "Bilbao" further enriched Xinhong Heavy Industry's desulfurization modification experience, laying a solid foundation for subsequent modifications of similar series ships.
